An Indian taxi driver has been left badly bruised after being attacked by a passenger in Melbourne’s west.

Diljit Athwal picked up a passenger in a Kings Park street early this morning. Because it was before 5 am, he asked the passenger to pay him in advance, but the passenger refused, instead beating him violently.
Diljit, father of two young children, was left with two badly bruised eyes and four broken front teeth.

“If you haven’t money, why you call taxi?” he told 7 News.
“He can hit me here, I can die…definitely”
Diljit told 7 news that even after the assault, the passenger kept on threatening him and he had no choice but to drive him to a street in St. Albans.

Being the sole income earner of the family, Diljit has no other choice but to get back on the road. But he is having second thoughts about staying in Melbourne.

He expressed fears about his safety.
“if we protect ourselves then we are in trouble and they are safe.”
