Indian man builds Wimbledon’s Centre Court replica from toothpicks

An Indian man has spent hours working on a replica model of Wimbledon’s Centre Court which had been made entirely out of toothpicks from the supermarket!

An Indian man living in UK has shown utmost dedication and patience by spending countless hours on building a replica of Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Wimbledon is one of the four major Tennis Grand Slams and is the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

Shaminder Singh, who lives in Coventry, UK started building the replica of the Centre Court in his living room in Coventry in September 2016.

The 31-year-old is a fork lift driver by profession and usually works night shifts. After finishing his work early morning, he would get a few hours’ sleep and then get up and start working on the replica.

"After finishing work in the morning at 06:00 I just have a couple of hours sleep and then I get back on to this."

According to Shaminder, he spent around 40 hours per week on this handmade model.

The replica is made entirely out of toothpicks bought from the local supermarket.

But the process was not easy. Shaminder had to research countless photos of the Centre Court on the internet to find out every detail of the structure and also to check and double check that he is getting the intricate details right.

"It's been hard work. Small work and it's taken a lot of time to make it,"

The model intricately designed and includes details such as the Royal box, grand folding roof and corridors.

After spending around 40 hours a week for around ten months, the finished model stands at 50cm by 20cm (19.5inches by 8inches). Shaminder has offered to auction the model for charity.

Shaminder has previously created models of Old Trafford and a plastic miniature stadium in the memory of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes. 

The Wimbledon 2017 Grand Slam Championship is on at the moment with Roger Federer defeating T Berdych 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 in semi-finals last night. He will play Marin Cilic in the finals on Sunday. Women’s final will take place today between G. Muguruza and V. Williams.
