This new British-German series based on Zoran Drvenkar’s thriller novel, You, is being described as a mix of neon noir, blended with indie-era Guy Ritchie violence, sprinkled with dark comedy and brought together by a superior ensemble cast. Now that sounds like one good TV recipe. Get ready to go on a wild ride with the unique eight-part series, Then You Run.

Rebellious teenagers and best friends, Tara (Leah McNamara), Stink (Vivian Oparah), Ruth (Yasmin Monet Prince) and Nessi (Isidora Fairhurst) are on a getaway in Rotterdam to visit Tara's estranged father. But when he is discovered dead, the friends find themselves on the run across Europe — with three kilos of stolen heroin (hey, they needed to take something to fund their escape) and a host of deadly criminals snapping at their heels. The stolen heroin belongs to Tara's uncle, Reagan (Richard Coyle) and he just happens to be the most feared gangster in Rotterdam.

Initially fuelled by vengeance, Reagan hunts them from roadside hypermarkets to hedonistic festivals and sweeping Norwegian fjords. But the more he sees of Tara, the more fascinated Reagan becomes – because it appears that Tara may have inherited her family’s propensity for violence - and she may well be the natural heir that Reagan has failed to find in his own son.

And all the while, a mythical serial killer known as The Traveller (Christian Rubeck) inches ever closer…

Here's what the critics are saying...

⭐⭐⭐⭐
"like Derry Girls, but with a lot more murder and heroin."

"a frenetic hybrid of Luther and The Hangover, with an added sprinkle of Scandi-noir bleakness – and four teenage girls as the lead characters."

"This is highly stylised, pulpy action, and it twists and turns with dizzying speed... An enjoyably chaotic thriller that looks the business, and doesn’t take its foot off the pedal for a second.”

"It is jam-packed with ideas, characters, themes and tones...it blends them into a delicious cocktail, one which is unlike any gangster show or coming-of-age series on TV right now."

⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Then You Run strikes the right balance between utterly ludicrous and suspenseful in a way that mirrors Netflix dark comedy drama Dead to Me."

Grazia
“Rarely does a TV show come along that feels as raucous and unique as new Sky drama Then You Run.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
"It’s entertaining in the vein of the most mindlessly enjoyable action films, set apart by its well-defined, charismatic characters."

“Slick thriller… It’s this blend of humour, heart and jump scares that will keep me tuning in.”

“Nicely shot and well performed... A lesson in how to do ultraviolence on screen”

⭐⭐⭐⭐
"With influences taken from Martin McDonagh’s seminal thriller In Bruges, sitting alongside flashes of Matthew Vaughn’s Layer Cake and indie era Guy Ritchie – Then You Run is a certified classic straight off the blocks."

“There’s enough energy and intrigue to persuade you not to run from this one.”

Then You Run premieres exclusively in Australia at SBS On Demand from Thursday 31 August. Watch the trailer:
