Thieves have struck at a home of an Indian family in Melbourne’s west, decamping with expensive jewellery and a luxury car in a broad daylight break-in that was captured on camera.

Monica Raizada and her husband Rakesh were away when three thieves made their way into the couple’s Werribee home kicking down the front door Thursday afternoon.

“We have lost a lot of expensive items. They have taken away every piece of our jewellery. They went through every single drawer, every single cupboard, even in the kitchen,” said Ms Raizada who unsuccessfully contested the last council election.

The neighbours initially thought the couple had visitors but only realised what had happened when they saw Mr Raizada’s Audi speeding off. They then informed the police and also broke the news to the Raizadas.
The couple thought their house was secure with multiple video surveillance cameras installed inside and outside it. However, they are amazed at the audacity of the alleged offenders.

Mr Raizada says the alleged offenders were young men and he calls for a tougher approach to deal with the youth crime in Melbourne.

“Something like this has never happened in our neighbourhood before. They just came and did this to us in broad daylight,” says Mr Raizada.

“What has happened to us is saddening. But there should be a multi-pronged approach tackling them (youth offenders) and there has been a talk of tougher laws, those should be made effective so that the community doesn’t suffer,” he adds.

Even though the security cameras didn’t protect their house from being ransacked, the Raizadas say they at least have a crucial evidence against the offenders, one of whom is clearly identifiable in the footage.
