A 24-year-old Indian international student who is in Australia to pursue his Masters degree has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after the truck he was driving crashed into a car, killing the occupant on January 4th, reports.
Indian national Hari Bommareddy is pursuing his Masters of Engineering Management at Deakin University.
He works as a part-time delivery truck driver and was driving the Isuzu truck on the morning of January 4th when he collided with a Commodore at Newbury, en-route to Trentham, the police has alleged.
The head-on collision killed 30-year-old John Wilson, an engaged to be married dad of a two-year-old child.
Police have alleged that Bommareddy drove into Mr Wilson’s lane, causing the head-on collision.
The Ballarat Magistrates Court was told on Friday that the evidence showed Mr Wilson had braked heavily.
Detective leading senior Constable Matthew Hunt told the court that post-impact marks showed the truck had been in Mr Wilson’s lane.
Mr Bommareddy thought Mr Wilson had driven onto his side of the road, police said.
He gave a clean breath test at the scene, police added.
Mr Bommareddy was granted bail after he surrendered his Indian passpost.
He will be able to continue his studies and other part-time job as a retail assistant but will not be allowed to drive.
He is scheduled to reappear in the Bendigo Magistrates Court on May 16th for a committal mention.
