Feel like a break from reality? Then dive into these drama and comedy series while waiting for more (new episodes weekly Wednesday's at 7:30PM on SBS and SBS On Demand).

The Last Man on Earth

We have every episode of the Will Forte comedy The Last Man on Earth and this series is like another level of surviving alone. The year is 2022, and after a deadly virus has swept the planet, average guy Phil Miller (Will Forte) searches the country for other survivors, but finds no one. Phil comes to the painful realisation that he is almost certainly the last living being on Earth. All he wants is for someone – anyone – to find him, preferably a woman.

Weirdly some of this series is now scarily relatable. The virus sweeps the planet in 2020 (creepy) and one of the first celebs to die from it was Tom Hanks. ( The parallels!) Phil does find other survivors, played by an incredible cast including Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Cleopatra Coleman, Mary Steenburgen, Mel Rodriguez and Kristen Wiig. This dark comedy will make you laugh, cringe and also hit you right in the feels.

Day of the Dead

Surviving in the wilderness alone is hard, but what about surviving a zombie apocalypse? Inspired by George A. Romero’s 1985 masterpiece (), this is one fun romp of a take on the hugely popular horror franchise. When six strangers face the first 24 hours after an invasion of the undead, they band together (unlike most zombie tales where crisis brings out the worst in each other). Together, they embark on ass-kicking adventures and discover how their differences are strengths that benefit the whole.

Django

If you want to keep things gritty, this Western will do just that. We’re in 1800s Texas, and years ago when he was at war, Django’s whole family was massacred. But the haunted man believes his daughter Sarah (Lisa Vicari, Dark) is still alive. He finds her in New Babylon – where all misfits and newcomers to the Wild West are welcome and equal – about to marry the town’s founder, John Ellis (Nicholas Pinnock, Counterpart). While Sarah wants Django to leave, blaming him for the fate of their family, his arrival is timely as John’s enemy (Noomi Rapace, ) is closing in on them all.

Matthias Schoenaerts () is Django in this tribute to the 1966 Italian film of the same name. With a creative team boasting credits such as SBS On Demand favourites
 and
, this English-language French-Italian production is one to add to your watch-list.

Forged in Fire

Learn how to make an item to take into the Australian wilderness with you in this popular competition series. In Forged in Fire the best bladed weapon-makers in America go head-to-head building everything from Viking battle axes to Samurai swords to Indian claw daggers. The contestants have everything at their disposal at The Forge to make these weapons including propane forges, coal forges, grinders, power hammers and hydraulic presses. As safety is a concern, medical personnel are present to treat any injuries or other health problems and may, at their discretion, disqualify smiths who are unable to continue safely. The weapons created are tested against objects and environments similar to the historical scenarios in which they were typically used. The winner leaves with $10,000 cash and the coveted title of Forged in Fire Champion.

Abandoned Engineering

What about when buildings are alone? What happens when people just disappear? This fascinating series explores just that. Scattered across the world are numerous abandoned sites: forgotten fragments of incredible engineering feats, sprawling ghost towns, puzzling industrial complexes and the sinister remains of bloody conflicts.

In season 7, the intriguing locations include a ferocious boat-plane hybrid decaying in Russia, the gaudy remains of an Iraqi dictator’s palace, mystical ancient ruins deep in the Cambodian jungle, and a remote Argentine island once the laboratory for Nazi scientists working on a secret nuclear project – after WWII had ended. Within these decaying structures are the echoes of history – they speak of death and destruction, but also human ingenuity and endeavour, each haunted shell now ready to be unmasked and tell its own unique story.
