Rogue Heroes

Based on Ben Macintyre's best-selling book, SAS: Rogue Heroes, this six-part British series is a dramatised account of how the Special Forces unit, known as the SAS, was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of WWII. From the creator of Peaky Blinders, the humour's just as dark to match and it features an all-star cast including Dominic West (The Crown), Connor Swindells (Vigil), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), with Jack O'Connell (Seberg) and Sofia Boutella (Climax). Season 2 is in production so jump into this high-octane series now.

Wayward Pines

From the minds of M. Night Shyamalan and The Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) comes this highly addictive psychological thriller. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) arrives in the town of Wayward Pines to investigate the disappearance of two federal agents (one being his former lover). But this small town is not at all what it seems. Some of the residents are suitably creepy, you can't contact the outside world and the real stickler, you can't leave. Will Burke be able to discover what happened to the missing agents and uncover the truth about this mysterious town?

The Last Man on Earth

The year is 2022, and after a deadly virus has swept the planet, average guy Phil Miller (Will Forte) searches the country for other survivors, but finds no one. Phil comes to the painful realisation that he is almost certainly the last living being on Earth. All he wants is for someone – anyone – to find him, preferably a woman.

Weirdly some of this series is now scarily relatable. The virus sweeps the planet in 2020 (creepy) and one of the first celebs to die from it was Tom Hanks. (What? The parallels!) Phil does find other survivors, played by an incredible cast including Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Cleopatra Coleman, Mary Steenburgen, Mel Rodriguez and Kristen Wiig. This dark comedy will make you laugh, cringe and also hit you right in the feels.

COBRA

Starring Victoria Hamilton (The Crown) and Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) as the PM, COBRA (meaning Cabinet Office Briefing Room A) is the British government's crisis team put together to deal with national emergencies, and this time there's a solar flare striking Europe. As the crisis unfolds, the group of senior civil servants, military and intelligence personnel do their best to manage the event, while dealing with the ongoing dramas in their personal and professional lives. Season 2 of the gripping political thriller has recently landed on SBS On Demand and the team now have to deal with a cyber attack on the UK.

Blue Lights

From the writers of The Salisbury Poisonings, Blue Lights takes us to Belfast where three rookie cops – young Annie (Katherine Devlin), midlife career-changer Grace (Sian Brooke) and dedicated if socially awkward Tommy (Nathan Braniff) ­– are hoping to be selected once their probation ends in two months. It's unlikely all three will make it. Meanwhile, a large-scale investigation into a local gang has been suddenly shut down, begging the question, who is protecting them?  

The Guardian gave this "well-crafted, fantastically tense, thrilling" crime drama 5 stars and called it "one of TV's best shows". A second season has been green-lit. You don't want to miss this one.

Vigil

When a crew member is found dead on the Royal Navy's HMS Vigil nuclear submarine, DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) is brought on board to investigate. The crew fob her off, telling her it was an overdose, but she suspects foul play; the crew close ranks. Meanwhile, Silva's colleague Det. Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) investigates on dry land where another death convinces them of a coordinated attack. A further discovery enlivens grave threats to Vigil and her crew. Featuring an ensemble cast of familiar faces from the UK (including Rogue Heroes' Connor Swindells), this series is a thrilling watch.

Love/Hate

From Ireland, award-winning film/TV maker David Caffrey (Pure Grit, The Alienist) directed five seasons of this crime drama centring on Darren (Robert Sheehan), who can't seem to keep away from his old gang, despite his desire to leave trouble behind. The 2010–14 series kept viewers glued to the screen in those pre-streaming days when it first aired. From writer Stuart Carolan (Taken Down, The Alienist) Love/Hate also stars Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (who is also in Dublin Murders now streaming at SBS On Demand), Chris Newman, Killian Scott, Charlie Murphy, Aidan Gillen and Aoibhinn McGinnity.

The X-Files

If all else fails you can't go wrong (or run out of episodes) with 11 seasons of this sci-fi classic. FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are assigned to investigate the X-Files: those mysterious cases the government hasn't been able to explain.
