Top new series in August 2023

With SBS Originals taking us all around the land, an array of international series and food and travel shows galore, August delivers in spades.

Breaking Point – season 1

From Germany comes this six-part thriller in which five people in a shopping mall are thrown together at a crucial and dangerous moment. It follows the fate of each individual who is under immense stress in their life – security guard Georg’s wife has been blinded; Mira’s job is under threat due to her affair with the boss; Sarah’s doctor’s surgery is failing and she’s self-medicating to cope; convicted juvenile offender Lorenz waits tables while grappling with his past. But only one of them will reach breaking point.

Breaking Point premieres exclusively in Australia at SBS On Demand on Thursday 3 August.

Adam and Poh’s Great Australian Bites – season 1

Road tripping around Australia, Adam Liaw and Poh Ling Yeow reunite to pin down our national dish. Meat pies or lamingtons? How about banh mi or schnitzels or spaghetti Bolognese? From Uluru to Darwin, Ballarat to Bass Strait, Adam and Poh sample offerings from bakeries, pubs, Lazy Susans and more to uncover our national palate. Tip: have snacks ready.

Adam and Poh’s Great Australian Bites premieres at 8pm on SBS Food on Tuesday 8 August, airing weekly. Catch encore screenings on Sundays at 5.30pm. You can also stream episodes each week at SBS On Demand from Tuesday 8 August.

Secrets of the Superagers – season 1

This six-part scientific series shares all the secrets they divulge to Michael.

Shambles – season 1

Real-life comedian and artist Florence Foresti is no stranger to the glamorous world that opens up when one is thusly famous in France. Here, she takes her experience in performing one-woman shows to the next level. Shambles is a dramatised version of her life as both public figure and mother, lover and friend. It’s a shambolic and playful ride, in which Foresti shines like the star she is. Her dog gets a voice, and it’s fabulous, as are the song and dance numbers that cap off each episode. Also look for the ever excellent Vincent Cassel.

DNA – season 2

We welcome the return of Danish thriller DNA from the co-creator of The Killing. Bringing an international flavour, the discovery of dead Vietnamese nationals hands investigator Rolf Larsen (Anders W. Berthelsen) his brief. He ends up embroiled in the billion-dollar human trafficking underworld, masterminded by criminal networks that span the globe.

Wolf – season 1

DI Jack Caffery is on a mission to track down the killer of his ten-year-old brother in the 1990s. Meanwhile, holed up in their rural pile are the wealthy Anchor-Ferrers family who’ve become the victims of a cruel psychopath. When the two narratives collide, we embark on a nail-biting race against time. This thrilling UK series is based on the acclaimed novels by Mo Hayder, with Ukweli Roach (Blindspot) as Caffery. Juliet Stevenson also stars.

Wolf premieres exclusively in Australia at SBS On Demand on Wednesday 16 August. Episodes also air weekly on SBS from Wednesday 16 August at 9.30pm, with an encore screening of episode 1 Thursday 17 August at 10:20PM.

Syndrome E – season 1

We love a touch of sci-fi mixed with our crime dramas, and this six-part French offering delivers in full. Adapted from the international bestseller of the same name by Franck Thilliez by Spiral writer Mathieu Missoffe, Syndrome E pairs together brooding loner, cop Franck Sharko (Vincent Elbaz) and lieutenant Lucie Henebelle (Jennifer Decker), hellbent on destroying evil. Their investigations of top-secret scientific experiments and programs lead them down some pretty hairy rabbit holes, and we’re here for it all.

Syndrome E premieres exclusively in Australia at SBS On Demand from Thursday 24 August.

Forest of the Missing – season 1

This French crime drama is set near the border with Germany in a shared military base in the Black Forest. There, the bodies of twelve men – both French and German – are discovered. Some of the murders date back decades. Police inspector Erik Maes gets to work alongside Captain Franz Agerland. But Judge Camille Hartmann insists on being involved – she believes a car accident which affected her memory links her to the case. But there is more to be uncovered, and not just about who killed all those men.

Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico – season 1

Returning to the land of her ancestors, actor Eva Longoria explores the food of Mexico over six mouth-watering episodes. She delves into how the country’s rich culture, landscape and turbulent history have contributed to shaping Mexico’s cuisine, beloved all around the world.

Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico premieres in Australia on SBS from Thursday 24 August at 8.30pm. Episodes also air weekly and are available to stream at SBS On Demand the same time as broadcast.

Creamerie – season 2

We are thrilled New Zealand comedy Creamerie is back. The six-part sitcom with a dystopian twist picks up directly from season 1’s cliffhanger ending. Alex, Jamie, Pip and the lone male in town, Bobby, are on the run in one epic road trip, determined to bring wellness cult leader Lane to justice and uncover the truth about the MANdemic. Bring it on!

Season 2 of Creamerie premieres at SBS On Demand on Monday 28 August. Episodes also air weekly on SBS VICELAND from Monday 28 August. Catch-up on season 1 now.

Divided We Stand – season 1

Winning Germany’s TV Academy awards in 2022 for the performances of its two leads, this six-part German crime drama is based on true events. Set in early 1990s Berlin, we follow the police officers who operated under ZERV, a special investigations unit dedicated to solving crimes committed in Communist-era days, but especially we focus on Peter Simon (Fabian Hinrichs) and Karo Schubert (Nadja Uhl). Hardly willing to work together, Simon and Schubert’s prickly relationship adds a great deal of spice.

Divided We Stand premieres exclusively in Australia at SBS On Demand from Thursday 31 August.

Then You Run – season 1

When London teenager Tara (Leah McNamara) is sent to Rotterdam to live with her estranged father, she brings her three closest mates with her for a mini-break. But when she discovers Dad’s real business and he shows up dead, the girls flee – with bags of heroin – across Europe. For those after them, the message is clear: “Get the girls, get the gear, don’t be merciful.” This darkly comic high-energy eight-parter is adapted from Zoran Drvenkar’s novel You, an “audacious and unpredictable combination of pulp, pluck and revenge thriller”. Prepare for a wild ride.
