I Am Scrooge

Set in the 1980s and 1990s and based on real events, this German crime drama tells the true story of Arno Funke, better known to the world as Scrooge the department store extortionist. A Berlin painter with a talent for inventions is looking for a way out of his dreary life and decides to use his extraordinary inventiveness to make quick money. Identifying himself as Dagobert Duck — the German name for the Disney character Scrooge McDuck — Funke targeted some of Germany’s biggest department stores, beginning with Berlin’s KaDeWe in 1988, while continually outwitting police and even becoming a local folk hero.

I Am Scrooge premieres Thursday 2 May on SBS On Demand.

Eight new prominent Australian personalities trek across the globe to delve into the mystery of their ancestral pasts in a brand-new season of Who Do You Think You Are? Manu Feildel, Miranda Otto and Pat Rafter join the cast of the much-loved genealogy series, following in the footsteps of their ancestors, to understand the global and personal events that shaped their family history. They are joined by Kathy Lette, Wayne Blair, Melissa Doyle, Stephen Curry and Heather Ewart.

Season one of the hit Finnish crime series was set in summer, for season two it's spring time in Helsinki and Sergeant Timo Harjunpää and his partner Onerva Nykänen are coming across some unusual cases. A young man is running a love scam and is in love with his boss. A gang war between youths rages between East Helsinki and Espoo. A peculiar and non-violent creep finds himself lying next to women and couples at night. And then there's the problems at work and the pressures at home. Based on Matti Yrjänä Joensuu’s much-loved series of novels, if you're a Nordic Noir fan you'll want to add this series to your favourites.

There they find unexpected opportunity - in music. A new sound is emerging born of the contradictions and conflicts that surround them. This new drama written and created by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Rogue Heroes) about the formation of an 80s new wave band has been described as "intelligent, ambitious and anarchic" and that "there is no point in resisting this bold, brilliant TV show."

Six-part drama, This Town, premieres Wednesday 22 May at 9:30PM on SBS. Episodes air weekly and are available to stream the same day as broadcast on SBS On Demand.

This gripping espionage spy drama is based on real events that occurred in the early days of the European Secret Services.

Bäckström - season 3

Everyone's favourite unscrupulous and arrogant detective is back! Behind his boss' back, Bäckström travels to the holiday paradise of Palma to follow up on a lead on the murder of his childhood friend Sally - his only unsolved murder case. When a Swedish man is found murdered in the hotel, Bäckström starts his own investigation, which is not appreciated by the local police. Meanwhile, an explosive device suspected of being linked to the Tälje cartel goes off in central Stockholm. The two murder cases and the explosive device in Stockholm seem somehow connected. But will Bäckström get the answers he needs in the case of his childhood friend Sally to finally feel at peace?

But when he crosses a top drug dealer, he starts to fall back into old ways. The critically acclaimed and six-time BAFTA-nominated, International Emmy winning BBC drama sees Adam Nagaitis (The Terror; Chernobyl), Bernard Hill (Wolf Hall; Lord of the Rings, Titanic) and Ian Puleston-Davies (Tin Star) joining the cast for season 2 alongside Freeman and Adelayo Adedayo returning to their roles.

The Responder season 2 premieres on SBS with a double episode launch Thursday 30 May at 9:30PM. Episodes will then air weekly and are available to stream the same day as broadcast on SBS On Demand. Catch-up on season 1 now.
