The characters you loved (or loved to hate) from ‘The Good Wife’ are in ‘The Good Fight’

There’s no Alicia – yet – but there are plenty of familiar faces in the mix.

Some spin-offs have only a very tenuous link with the shows that spawned them (Happy Days and Mork & Mindy, anyone?), but The Good Fight is not one of them. While you certainly don't have to have watched The Good Wife to understand what's going on in The Good Fight, it is very much a continuation of The Good Wife – at least, as far as some characters are concerned.

With several regular and recurring cast members making the jump to the new show, fans of The Good Wife will feel right at home with the new series. Among the lengthy list of returning characters are:

Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski)

She’s still one of the most powerful and well respected women in the Chicago legal profession, but the senior partner is preparing to retire and enjoy the fruits of her labour.

Kurt McVeigh (Gary Cole)

Given the events of The Good Wife finale, it’s no spoiler to reveal things between Diane and her ballistics expert husband, Kurt, are still strained.

Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo)

The ambitious, whip-smart lawyer, who Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) met in bond court, continues to get the job done – albeit for her new firm, Reddick, Boseman & Kolstad.

There’s no situation this quick-thinking, rapid-talking jill of all trades can’t turn to her own advantage, which makes the new career path she’ll explore perfectly suited to her.

David Lee (Zach Grenier)

The snarky divorce lawyer has never been what you could call trustworthy or loyal. Guess what: nothing’s changed.

Howard Lyman (Jerry Adler)

Usually found wandering the law firm halls in a daze – when he’s not napping, that is – this aging partner is, incredibly, still in the game.

Mike Kresteva (Matthew Perry)

The former candidate for the Illinois governorship – he lost to Peter Florrick (Chris Noth) – is known to bend the truth to breaking point. And so of course he’s working for the Department of Justice now.

It’s always fun watching characters encounter this quirky attorney for the first time - one judge describes her as an “acquired taste”. True, but she also has one of the sharpest minds in the business. As far as fan favourite characters from The Good Wife go, she's right up there.

Julius Cain (Michael Boatman)

We saw the head of litigation at Lockhart Gardner less and less as The Good Wife continued, but he’ll be a major presence in former partner Diane’s professional life again.

Neil Gross (John Benjamin Hickey)

Diane will run into the Chumhum owner and serial law firm swapper at a very opportune time, especially given the potential for $86 million in business for the law firm.

Colin Sweeney (Dylan Baker)

The most delightfully despicable client ever represented in The Good Wife is back, in the type of lawsuit you’d never expect the multiple murder suspect to be involved with.

Pastor Jeremiah Easton (Frankie Faison)

He’s a high profile religious leader in Chicago who both the Florricks had dealings with in the past. Now, the pastor finds himself facing some incredibly damaging accusations.

We encountered this tech lawyer in The Good Wife in cases involving Bitcoin and Anonymous. He seeks out Diane for help with another net-based issue, and, as usual, all is not what it seems.

And then there’s…

The Good Fight Jane Alexander Denis O'Hare Christine Lahti

Given The Good Fight is set in the same city as its predecessor, it makes sense for us to run into lawyers and judges we’ve seen before. Keep an eye out for infuriating opposing counsel Andrea Stevens (Christine Lahti), while behind the bench, Judge Charles Abernathy (Denis O'Hare) is at his daffiest. Expect return performances from Jane Alexander as Judge Suzanne Morris and Mark Linn-Baker as Judge Don Linden as well.

The Good Fight airs every Wednesday at 9:30pm on SBS. Episodes are also available on  after each episode airs.
