Comedy series Shrill is based on ’s best-selling memoir. Based on her life and times as a “fat” woman navigating her twenties, the show’s writers have also stepped outside West’s personal experience to create the unique lead, Annie Easton, played beautifully by Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant. Annie deals with fat-shaming, an infuriating boss and a drop-kick of a boyfriend while discovering the value of her own voice. English comedian Lolly Adefope plays Annie’s bestie, Fran.

Zooey Deschanel’s effervescent Jess, fresh from a breakup, moves in with three single guys. The Last Man On Earth
It’s 2022, and Phil Miller is the last man on Earth, the sole survivor of a cataclysmic event. Phil searches for other survivors to quell his deepening loneliness, and finally encounters Carol (Kristen Schaal) but co-existing with her is more challenging than he anticipated. When more survivors show up, the challenges only grow.
Starring Will Forte as Phil (Forte also created the show), the strong cast includes comedy pros Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), and January Jones (Mad Men) proves her comedy chops.

Wellington Paranormal
With their track record in TV and film, it’s no wonder wildly talented New Zealanders Jemaine Clement (What We Do In The Shadows) and freshly crowned Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi have created a hit mockumentary. Now into its second season, under Sergeant Maaka, Officers Karen O’Leary and Mike Minogue investigate the paranormal goings-on in the nation’s capital. One such case is of disappearing fishermen and women, including NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s fiancé, Clarke Gayford. Others include uncovering the mystery of three high school students with the same name acquiring sinister powers, unleashing the ghost of a 1930s cop and encountering their own doppelgangers. Cavendish
Co-created by Garry Campbell, Mark Little and Andy Bush, the latter two men also co-star as brothers Mark and Andy who return to their hometown of Cavendish, Canada after 30 years away to look after their ill father Rollie (Kevin Eldon). Cavendish embraces them immediately, and they’re soon cast in a local production of Anne of Green Gables. But things turn strange as they discover the beloved children’s novel has sparked the formation of a cult. If that wasn’t weird enough, they have other mounting questions. Is that a beast roaming the woods? Are those ancient statues possessed? Is there a coven? This innocent-looking town has more in store for the siblings than they bargained for.

Letterkenny
There must be something in the Canadian waters. From the bizarre world of Cavendish we travel inland to the rural Ontario township of Letterkenny. This show is the very definition of weird, the residents each uniquely odd. Co-creators Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney have grouped together different expressions of manhood, from the not-so-brainy hockey players to the meth-smoking skids to the close-knit hicks. Played out in cartoonish slow motion, punch-ups determine the toughest bloke in town, with lead hick Wayne (Keeso) consistently emerging victorious. The vernacular is as strange and alluring as the dynamics between the gangs, who love nothing more than to focus on what separates them, and, on the odd occasion, cooperate in high jinks. Can you work out what’s going on?

Nirvanna The Band The Show
Creators and stars Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol play Matt and Jay, members of a band they’ve problematically called Nirvanna The Band. They’re desperate to book a gig at Toronto’s Rivoli and brainstorm how to make their dream come true. Trouble is, they have no idea what they’re doing. Watching them fail over and over is a scream in this mockumentary that blends fiction with reality. Canadian comedy strikes again!

You’re The Worst
From creator Stephen Falk comes this story of romantic failures, Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash). The pair bond over Jimmy’s meltdown at a wedding, directed at the bride, his ex, and take each other home for lots of sex and end up also doing lots of talking. While they come to realise how much they enjoy each other’s company, they’re also heavily resistant to a relationship. They might be the worst, but their honest quips are the best.

Seth MacFarlane is the creator, writer and star of popular futuristic comedy, The Orville. Set 400 years into the future and follows the challenges faced by the human and alien crew of the USS Orville. It’s built a loyal following both here and in the US since first appearing on screens, also inspiring SBS’s own podcast.

What Would Diplo Do?
In this mockumentary, James Van Der Beek, who bears a strikingly resemblance to the main man, plays a fictional version of DJ superstar and collaborator with other music superstars, Diplo. With a mix of narration of his stream of consciousness and über serious conversations with his entourage about other people in the biz, the five episodes unfold a series of parables from the wildly successful DJ who can pack out stadiums, but who’s presented as being rather irritating face to face.
