Creamerie
Set in New Zealand’s lush countryside, this dark comedy is anything but - and for good reason. Creamerie asks an age-old question - can the world actually survive without men? After a deadly virus wipes out the male population, a cult-ish cluster of women rebuild the world. When three friends (Ally Xue, J. J Fong, Perlina Lau) encounter the seemingly last surviving man on Earth (Jay Ryan), the trio is faced with a conundrum: hand him to the cult, or join him in his quest for the truth. As they carefully prod the latter, this post-apocalyptic series proves playful, painful and packed with laughs. The first season’s cliffhanger had viewers in shambles, and eager fans waited two years for an answer (myself included). Thankfully, you don’t have to.

A fresh-faced Zach Braff leads an ensemble cast of budding comics in this rambunctious hospital sitcom. Another great series from our friends across the Tasman (less apocalyptic though, but just as many trees!), Rurangi follows the reluctant journey back to his hometown of young trans man Caz (Elz Carrad) . As Caz eases into the world he purposely left behind, his best friend Anahera (Awhina-Rose Ashby) fights on the frontline in their town council’s struggle to keep the Maori language alive. An old lover is soon thrown into the mix, proving for Caz that a transition, of any kind, is never easy. Rurangi, both the series and the town in which it’s set, is lamington-jam-packed with heart and home.

In Two Weeks To Live, she carries Arya’s flame as Kim, an independent strong-willed daughter, raised off the grid by her survivalist mother, seeking revenge for the murder of her father. Trained ferociously in combat by her mother (Sian Clifford) and armed with something other than a Needle, Kim thinks she has a two-week window to avenge her father’s death. The lone wolf makes new connections along the way, and she is given a glimpse of a ‘normal’ world. Perhaps it’s not ‘Valar morghulis! (All men must die!)’ after all.

When Swedish high school sweethearts David (Simon Loof) and Siri (Matilda Källström) encounter an alluring Camilla (Alma Jodorowsky) on a night out, their reputable relationship is turned upside down. As the two dabble in polyamory, their loyalties are tested. It’s the eventual appearance of John (Lucien Laviscount, Emily In Paris) that turns this crowd into a party. I recommend watching this show on your own or with a loved one - perhaps even in threes, we won’t judge!
