Catch Me a Killer

In South Africa in the 90s, a string of serial killers terrified the nation, and journalist-turned psychologist Dr Micki Pistorius (Charlotte Hope, who played Catherine of Aragon in The Spanish Princess) was on the front lines hunting them down – and was hunted by them in turn. Based on the real-life story of South Africa’s first criminal profiler, this series follows Pistorius as she deals with a police force that doesn’t respect women, fellow officers who don’t respect the idea of getting inside the mind of criminals, and remorseless murderers who don’t respect anything.

Opioid addiction has been a massive blight on America, a tidal wave of misery that has shattered communities and the lives of thousands. This gripping new series looks at how one company’s relentless drive for profit triggered this devastation, tracking the path from Americas boardrooms to the rural towns it destroyed, and the DEA's attempts to contain the carnage. With an all-star cast (including Michael Keaton, Rosario Dawson, Phillipa Soo and Peter Sarsgaard) and based on the New York Times bestselling book by Beth Macy, it’s a powerful look at a massive and ongoing crisis.

All eight episodes of Dopesick are streaming at SBD On Demand.

We Are Who We Are

Two American kids growing up on a US military base in Italy are at the centre of this critically acclaimed coming-of-age series by Academy Award-nominated director Luca Guadagnino. Together with their group of friends, the two – one introverted and angry at being taken halfway around the world by his military mothers, the other Italian-speaking and seemingly confident – navigate the perils and pleasures of their teenage years in a lush, sun-struck setting that’s brought to life with all the style and flair you’d expect from the director of Call Me By Your Name.

We Are Who We Are is streaming now at SBS On Demand.

The Responder

Prowling the streets of Liverpool after dark, Chris (Martin Freeman) is a first responder – a police officer responding to emergency calls. Violent crime, drug abuse, poverty and general disrespect, they’ve all taken their toll, leaving him torn between compassion and contempt for those he deals with. And all the while his drug dealer mates, a new partner, and his own fragile mental state are pushing him towards the edge; Freeman’s astonishing and powerful performance in this gritty series is one it’s impossible to look away from.

L'Opera

Palais Garnier is home to France’s foremost opera and ballet company, but behind the polished façade lies a whole lot of hard work. Prima Ballarina Zoé Monin (Ariane Labed) is at the top of her field, so it’s all downhill from here; newcomer Flora Soumaré (Suzy Bemba) is one of the few black dancers in a field where talent often comes second to connections. And new dance director Sébastian (Raphaël Personnaz) is here to shake things up – which makes him a threat to former friend Zoé. Praised by insiders for its accuracy, it’s a warts-and-all look at the sometimes ugly business of making something beautiful.

The Young Pope

Italian writer / director Paolo Sorrentino made his name with films like the Academy Award-winning The Great Beauty, but it’s increasingly clear that this energetic, freewheeling series will likely stand as his greatest triumph. When American Lenny Belardo (Jude Law, in a powerhouse performance) becomes Pope, he rapidly turns the Catholic Church on its head. Powerful forces are soon moving against the charming young Pope, but it may be his own past that’s his biggest threat - and when you’re done, there’s Sorrentino’s sequel series The New Pope to look forward to.
