SBS VICELAND kickstarts the festivities, screening the two-part Gangs of Wasseypur on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November.

From the moment he arrives in Paris, nothing goes as planned. Aja falls for a young American woman (Erin Moriarty) in the midst of an existential crisis; wakes up in a truck full of Somalian refugees (one of whom is played by Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi) headed for England; is caught up in a bureaucratic stand-off; helps a movie star (Berenice Bejo) with her love life; risks his life in a Roman palace; travels by sea, air and hot-air balloon; and that's just a small part of his odyssey.

What's it about?
Gippy Grewal portrays Indian war hero Subedar Joginder Singh, who famously fought three wars for India, including the Sino-Indian War of 1962.  He was the recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration, awarded for displaying distinguished acts of valour during wartime.

It is based on the urban legend of 'Nale Ba' that went viral in Karnataka in the 1990s. Enjoy! (*and sleep with one open, guys)

After realising the mix-up, the strangers begin to communicate through a series of letters, revealing a little more of themselves each time. Joyous from start to finish.

Masaan

What's it about?
Director Neeraj Ghaywan's debut feature depicts people agitating for escape, on the banks of the Ganges. He said, "Most of the time, what Indian films show about small cities is poverty and beautiful landscapes. We felt like showing an actual, real-life town on the brink of change, where young people talk about engineering or Facebook and still feel they’re in a socio-economic trap". It paints a picture of class and gender inequality, through four intersecting characters, with ties to the cremation ghats that line the river.  Masaan premiered in Un Certain Regard at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
