It’s time to check some series off your watch-list. Here is a collection of 10 short (and mini) series now streaming at SBS On Demand that you can easily marathon over a weekend.

Blue Lights

Total episodes: 6 x 52mins

From the writers of The Salisbury Poisonings, Blue Lights takes us to Belfast where three rookie cops – young Annie (Katherine Devlin), midlife career-changer Grace (Sian Brooke) and dedicated if socially awkward Tommy (Nathan Braniff) ­– are hoping to be selected once their probation ends in two months. It’s unlikely all three will make it. Meanwhile, a large-scale investigation into a local gang has been suddenly shut down, begging the question, who is protecting them?  

The Guardian gave this “well-crafted, fantastically tense, thrilling” crime drama 5 stars and called it "one of TV's best shows" and a second season has been green-lit, you don't want to miss this one.

Blue Lights is now streaming at SBS On Demand. Episodes also air weekly at 9.30pm Wednesdays on SBS from 24 May.

Rogue Heroes

Based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book, SAS: Rogue Heroes, this six-part British series is a dramatised account of how the Special Forces unit, known as the SAS, was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of WWII. From the creator of Peaky Blinders, the humour’s just as dark to match and it features an all-star cast including Dominic West (The Crown), Connor Swindells (Vigil), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), with Jack O’Connell (Seberg) and Sofia Boutella (Climax). Season 2 is in production so jump into this high-octane series now.

In this SBS On Demand Digital Original short-form series, an unlikely trio of food delivery riders get tangled up in a mission to uncover the truth and expose a multinational behemoth when one of their fellow riders dies on the streets of Sydney. Django

We’re in 1800s Texas, and years ago when he was at war, Django’s whole family was massacred. But the haunted man believes his daughter Sarah (Lisa Vicari, Dark) is still alive. He finds her in New Babylon – where all misfits and newcomers to the Wild West are welcome and equal – about to marry the town’s founder, John Ellis (Nicholas Pinnock, Counterpart). While Sarah wants Django to leave, blaming him for the fate of their family, his arrival is timely as John’s enemy (Noomi Rapace, What Happened to Monday) is closing in on them all.

Matthias Schoenaerts (A Bigger Splash) is Django in this tribute to the 1966 Italian film of the same name. With a creative team boasting credits such as SBS On Demand favourites  and , this English-language French-Italian production is a gritty Western you need to add to your watch-list.

Safe Home

An SBS Original drama series, Safe Home follows Phoebe (Aisha Dee), a twenty-something professional, who leaves her job at a prominent law firm to work at a struggling family violence legal centre. Interweaving stories unfold and relationships are tested as pressure mounts to save the centre. With so much at stake, Phoebe must navigate a path that isn’t always clear, and people aren’t always what they seem. The brilliant cast also includes Virginia Gay, Mabel Li, Thomas Cocquerel, Antonia Prebble and David Roberts, plus plenty more talented Australians.

SurrealEstate

The unseen realm provides the ‘surreal’ in this all-one-word titled real estate ten-part drama series with a twist. The Roman Agency specialises in properties that are ‘metaphysically engaged’ (in other words, haunted) and Luke Roman is able to not only sense but communicate with the ghostly inhabitants of these houses that nobody else is willing to take on. Things get even more interesting when he enters into negotiations with the spirit dwellers. The Canadian paranormal series also stars Schitt’s Creek’s Sarah Levy.

Vanda

Set in Costa da Caparica, Portugal, this series tells the true-to-life story (inspired by the story of Dulce Caroço) of a hard-working hair stylist and mother who finds herself broke and with two children in middle of the global financial crisis. Running out of options, she decides to take matters into her own hands and embarks on a string of bank heists with a wig and a toy gun. In the process she becomes a folk hero as she keeps the public guessing what her next move will be, and how long she can stay out of the police’s grasp.

Am I Being Unreasonable?

Nic, mum to the darling young Ollie (Lenny Rush), is harbouring a secret grief and is unhappy in her marriage. Jen, new in town, lights up Nic’s life with much-needed laughter and fun, extracting her dark secret, taking this comedy down a twisty path indeed. Written and created by friends Daisy May Cooper and Selin Hizli, who also star as Nic and Jen, this fun and frantic caper is executive produced by one of TV’s most exciting talents, Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials). No spoilers, but we are very glad a second season has been announced.

The Walk-In

Based on a true story, The Guardian called Philomena writer Jeff Pope’s drama about “reformed neo-Nazi Matthew Collins’ efforts to infiltrate and derail one of the UK’s most threatening far-right groups… one of the best investments you can make”. As the Brexit vote looms, tensions are running high across Britain’s political landscape. Stephen Graham plays Collins – “with his customary unshowy commitment and aplomb” – who now heads advocacy group, Hope Not Hate. When a right-wing fanatic murders MP Jo Cox (Bryony Corrigan) in the street (which happened in 2016), Collins springs into action to thwart extremist group National Action’s plan – to escalate a terrifying situation into a full-blown race war.

Vigil

When a crew member is found dead on the Royal Navy’s HMS Vigil nuclear submarine, DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) is brought on board to investigate. The crew fob her off, telling her it was an overdose, but she suspects foul play; the crew close ranks. Meanwhile, Silva’s colleague Det. Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) investigates on dry land where another death convinces them of a coordinated attack. A further discovery enlivens grave threats to Vigil and her crew. Featuring an ensemble cast of familiar faces from the UK, this series is a thrilling watch.
