Frank Ocean performed at the Panorama Music Festival in New York this weekend wearing a plain white t-shirt that asked a simple question in bold block lettering:
"Why be racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic when you could just be quiet?"
The singer was immediately praised on social media for using his platform to promote the message of anti-discrimination.
One Twitter user wrote: “My religion is frank ocean wearing this shirt.”
“Frank Ocean's T Shirt: my new political party and sexual orientation,” wrote another.
The shirt was made by —a business run by 18-year-old Kayla Robinson, an Afro-Latina woman who identifies as bisexual and is based in Florida.
“When I couldn't find any social justice tee shirts online for myself, that really would grab someones attention, I decided to make my own and sell them to raise money to get my yoga teacher certification (Now the ultimate vision is urban farming),” she writes on the site.
The t-shirt—available in white, pink, blue, gold and tie-dye— is advertised online with the description: "This shirt addresses how hate speech will not be tolerated by the 'tolerant left'."
The small business has since been inundated with orders for the now iconic t-shirt.
“I am extremely grateful for the way in which Frank Ocean has used his platform to bring attention to social justice issues via one of our shirts,” Robinson wrote on Instagram.
The store sells a number of political t-shirts with messages about climate change, race, sexuality, gender and the US prison system among others. The store recently created a new shirt that reads: 'Trans people are not a disruption' in response to President Trump's proposed transgender military ban.
The original message on the t-shirt worn by Frank Ocean is credited to Twitter user @avogaydro who first posted the message in August 2015.
