Former Disney star Garrett Clayton has come out as gay in an emotional Instagram post, sharing that he's in a long-term relationship with a man.

Ahead of the release of his new movie REACH, Clayton shared a moving anecdote about why he chose to be involved in the project, which explores themes of depression and suicide.

"REACH deals with some very serious and timely topics that have affected me personally, and have likely influenced many of your lives as well," he wrote.
"When I read the script, I immediately knew it was a film I had to be a part of," he added.

"I have personally dealt with suicide within my own family, intense bullying in high school, and - on top of it all - myself and the man I’ve been in a relationship with for a long time have both experienced shootings within our hometown school systems, and have witnessed the heartache that takes place in affected communities after such tragic events."
"These topics - not always easy to discuss- are all close to my heart, and, knowing how serious they are, I wanted to share this with you all. This film has come from the perspectives of people who care deeply about these issues, and if watching it helps even one person... then it was all worth it."

Clayton also tagged his partner, writer Blake Knight, in the post.
While some fans of the actor, who has also starred in films including King Cobra and Teen Beach Movie, claimed the subtle coming out wasn't a surprise, others sent the young star messages of support and congratulations.

"Garrett Clayton just came out as gay but the gag is we knew he was gay since teen beach movie," one fan wrote.

"Big congrats on living your truth!" tweeted the Los Angeles LGBT centre.
