Yates jumped clear from David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Australian teammate Jay Vine on the slopes of the Alto de Hazallas with 58km to go and never looked back, crossing the line in Granada a minute and 39 seconds ahead of Richard Carapaz (EF Education EasyPost) who finished second.
Australian Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) beat out his general classification rivals for third place on the stage, taking the four bonus seconds on offer to slightly extend his overall lead in the red jersey.

“I've never suffered like this before," Yates said following the stage.
"It was so hot out there. From the last climb, I was cramping full and I didn’t know if I could go. I’ve had a lot of bad luck over the years in Grand Tours and I really didn’t know if I could make it work. I’m just so happy I could eventually win another Grand Tour stage."
In sweltering conditions and multiple category 1 climbs for the peloton to navigate, the stage caused a massive shake up to the general classification, with stage winner Yates leading the charge and jumping twenty spots from 27th to 7th overall thanks to his winning effort.
Carapaz also vaulted up the rankings, his second place taking him from 18th to third overall and knocking Enric Mas (Movistar) off the last podium spot.
Once the dust had settled, O'Connor remains in the overall lead at the first rest day, now leading Primoz Roglic (BORA-Hansgrohe) by three minutes and 53 seconds with Carapaz in third, trailing the West Australian by four minutes and 32 seconds.
The race will resume on Tuesday night (AEST) with Stage 10, another mountainous affair which takes the riders on a 160km course from Ponteareas to Baiona.
