The Dane wasn't able to initially follow a powerful attack by Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) 600 metres before the summit of the Puy Mary-Pas de Peyrol, but persevered to eventually catch and then outsprint the yellow jersey for an incredible victory.
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) tried but failed to stay with first and second on the day, settling for third place after finishing 25 seconds behind Vingegaard and Pogacar.

Vingegaard silenced all doubts about his form with a statement performance, having returned to competition only three months removed from a horrific crash at the Tour of Basque Country that left him with a broken collarbone and several broken ribs among other injuries.
“This is of course a very emotional win for me," he said through tears after the stage.
"Coming back from the crash, it means a lot to me after all I went through in the last few months. Winning makes me think of that. I would have never been able to do this without my family. They supported me tremendously.
"Now I believe that I can win the Tour de France. Normally, I reach my highest level in the second and third week of racing. I hope this year I’ll do the same.”
With the last 30 kilometres of the stage being an all-out battle between the top riders, the general classification saw big changes, with second-placed Evenepoel losing 33 seconds to Pogacar to trail top spot by a minute and six seconds.
Vingegaard managed to gain one second on the Slovenian, still in third overall and a minute and 14 seconds behind the yellow jersey, but now only eight seconds down on Evenepoel.
Primoz Roglic (Red Bull BORA-Hansgrohe) looked to be limiting his losses as he rode with Evenepoel into the finish, but crashed with just 1.1 kilometres to go, causing him to lose 39 seconds on the line.
Race officials later adjusted Rogličs time loss according to the modified UCI 3km rules at Tour de France, which stated that stage 11 would use the 3km rule in Le Lioran, even though it was a mountain stage.
