Australian cycling community mourns death of Melissa Hoskins

The death of world champion cyclist Melissa Dennis née Hoskins has shocked the Australian cycling community, with tributes flowing for the decorated track and road cyclist.

Hoskins was a cycling world champion on the track, and also having a prestigious career on the road, the 32-year-old mother-of-two died on December 30 after she was hit by a car near her home at Medindie in Adelaide.

Her husband Rohan Dennis, also a cycling world champion, has been charged with multiple dangerous driving offences, with a trial set for March.

Hoskins competed in the Team Pursuit for Australia at two Olympics, becoming a world champion in the discipline alongside Annette Edmondson, Ashlee Ankudinoff and Amy Cure at the 2015 World Championships.

Edmondson led the outpouring of emotion for her former teammate, saying "I’m so grateful to have known you Mel. You drove me to become a better athlete. We were so competitive on the track and road, but when we came together in the team time trial and team pursuit, we were one."
AusCycling CEO, Marne Fechner, added to the tributes in a statement sent to AusCycling members.

"Melissa, a mother, daughter, and wife, was also a champion cyclist who thrilled and inspired us with her exquisite skills on the track and road.

"Melissa described her Team Pursuit Gold Medal at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships as the highlight of her career, but for the rest of us, the highlight was just having her around.

"Although she retired in 2017, her presence as an alumnus of the sport has been felt and appreciated by many in the cycling and riding community.

"AusCycling extends its deepest sympathies to Melissa’s family, friends, and former teammates and will determine an appropriate way to memorialise her and her contribution to our sport in coming days.
Hoskins became a professional in 2012 as a foundational member of the Orica-AIS team (also know as Greenedge), whom she rode with until the end of the 2015 season. She won the Tour of Chongming Island in 2012 and took a number of prestigious placings in European races, also winning the mountains classification at the Women's Tour in 2015.

Greenedge made their own tribute to Hoskins with an image of her winning a stage of the Santos Women's Tour, with the other member of the team featured in the picture, Valentina Scandolara, adding her own moving thoughts.
"Heartbreaking," said Scandolara. "I always loved this pic, but I’d never imagined I’d see it again in these circumstances.

"We were so happy that day. You just dominated the last stage of Santos Tour Down Under, and I got the GC. Just a couple of kms away from where it all happened, a few days ago.

"I can’t wrap my head around this. It’s just absurd. A beautiful life taken way too early. I hope that wherever you’re now, you’re smiling like that day, Melissa. Thoughts with Mel’s family and children. Fly high, legend."

Australian cycling trailblazer Tracey Gaudry added her voice to the cycling community's expression of grief over Hoskin's death.

"Rest in peace Melissa Dennis (nee Hoskins)," said Gaudry in a Facebook post. "Loved and revered by the global cycling family. Giving love and strength to your family, especially your two beautiful children, now and always."
Hoskins won five medals at the track World Championships and finished on the podium three times in the team time trial at the road World Championships.

Hoskins retired from cycling in 2017, married Rohan Dennis in 2018, and they lived together in Europe and Australia as they raised their family of two children.

SBS Sport wishes to pass on our sincere condolences to the friends and family of Melissa Hoskins.
