Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Fenix) won by millimetres in a photo finish with Demi Vollering (SD Worx-ProTime) as the two sprinted for stage honours in Liege, Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) finishing third behind.

After the three went clear in the final 15 kilometres of the stage, Niewiadoma tried to go early on the run-in to the line, Pieterse counter-attacking with a powerful surge over the top to hold off a fast-finishing Vollering for an incredible victory.

A star in the cyclocross cycling discipline, the victory is Pieterse's first in a World Tour road race, also taking the lead in the Queen of the Mountains and Young Rider classifications as a result.

“It’s quite unbelievable really," the 22-year-old said after the stage.

"The last few days I had super good legs, first day I had good legs, second day I had good legs and today I didn’t feel my legs at all. It’s always been good and to take the win here in a sprint against Demi [Vollering] it’s really a dream come true.

"We had to wait for what felt like ages for the result. I’m so happy to take the win. I live for this. I worked up so much for the Olympic games and when you have good legs there you have good legs here.”
Despite missing out on following up yesterday's time trial triumph with another stage win, Vollering extended her lead atop the general classification to 22 seconds, as Pieterse jumped 22 spots into second and Niewiadoma ascended 43 spots into third, 34 seconds behind Vollering.

Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) was the best placed Australian on the day, finishing 34th at a minute and 58 seconds behind stage winner Pieterse.

The Tour de France Femmes continues tonight as the peloton cross over into France for Stage 5, a 152.5km route from Bastogne to Amneville. Watch the action from 9:50pm AEST on SBS VICELAND and SBS On Demand.
