Legendary L'Alpe d'Huez returns to Tour de France in action-packed 2022 route

The 2022 Tour de France will include a return to the hairpins of L’Alpe d’Huez for the first time in four years after the route for the 109th edition was revealed on Thursday night.

SBS will air both the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes LIVE, FREE and in HD in 2022.

Race organisers have developed a rather balanced three-week event, with the route bookended by 53 kilometres worth of time trials.

Trips to the Vosges, Alps and Pyrenees once again offer climbers the chance to attack, as will the exposed roads of Denmark and the cobbles of northern France.

Defending Tour champion Tadej Pogačar was among those present at the Palais des Congres for the announcement, as was world champion Julian Alaphilippe and 2021 green jersey winner Mark Cavendish.
Christian Prudhomme, meanwhile, was on hand to unveil each stage, with the first taking place in Copenhagen, followed by a trek west to Nyborg and south to Sonderborg.

Riders will then receive a rare first rest day in Denmark, before a flight to Lille kickstarts a slew of sprint stages and punishing climbs in week two.

Of those climbs is a return to the 21 hairpins of L’Alpe d’Huez on Bastille Day; 166 kilometres all the way to a mountaintop finish last bested by Geraint Thomas at the Tour in 2018.

A transition to the south of France will next follow the climbs, paving the way for the Pyrenees and time trials to then take the peloton into Paris for the famous finish on the Champs-Elysees.
