Milan-Sanremo, or La Classicissima as it is know in Italy, is the longest one-day race on the professional cycling calendar at 291km and the first of the five monuments of cycling.

Departing from Milan in the north of Italy, the race travels south toward the Ligurian coast, heading over the first climb of the Turchino Pass before heading along the coastal roads toward Sanremo.
While there is not too much climbing along the nearly 300km route, key climbs such as the famous Cipressa and Poggio di San Remo in the closing stages can turn the race on its head.

Despite the long distance, the race has been favourable for sprinters throughout its history with famous wins from Mark Cavendish, Erik Zabel and Mario Cipollini.

It was back-to-back Aussie wins in 2011 and 2012 with Matthew Goss and SBS Sport's very own Simon Gerrans tasting victory on the Via Roma.

Modern-day powerhouse riders such as reigning Milan-Sanremo champion Mathieu van der Poel, Wout Van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe have dominated in recent years with their pure power, tactical genius, and stunning bike-handling skills proving to be the formula for victory.

Expect to see a strong contingent of Aussie riders at the start line during this year’s race with homegrown stars such as Caleb Ewan, Michael Matthews and Luke Plapp already declaring their intentions to take on the gruelling one-day race.
This year, Milan-San Remo will be shown on SBS for the first time since 2016 with full coverage of the race across both SBS On Demand and SBS.

You’ll be able to catch every kilometre of La Classicissima via SBS On Demand from 7:50pm (AEDT) on Saturday, March 16, with coverage on SBS starting at 11:10pm.
