A first-time candidate has snatched a seat from the opposition for the Northern Territory Labor government.
It is the first time in the NT's history that an incumbent government has won a seat at by-election.
The 31-year-old candidate, Yaegl man Dheran Young, is a former adviser to the territory's Attorney-General, Nunggubuyu woman Selena Uibo, and will now represent the electorate of Daly.
The by-election was triggered when Country Liberal Party member Ian Sloan quit citing health reasons. It is the first time since 2012 the CLP have lost the seat since 2012.
Mr Young ran on a platform of delivering on homelands and housing funding, and banked on goodwill from the government's handling of the pandemic.
When counting had stopped on Saturday night, he enjoyed a swing of 7.1 per cent in his favour.
"It was also the result of a good grassroots campaign and I thank everyone who voted," he said on Monday.
At the 2016 census, there were almost 10,000 people in the electorate of Daly. 44 per cent of the population identified as Indigenous.
The seat covers a vast area of more than 77,000 square kilometres, and includes the towns of Adelaide River, Acacia Hills, Batchelor, Dundee Beach, Nauiyu Nambiyu, Pine Creek, Timber Creek and Wadeye.
