Triple J is consulting audiences about the proposal to change the date of its Hottest 100 Music countdown from the traditional January 26 date.
The move was first considered last year after an online petition calling for a new date attracted thousands of signatures, due to the controversial nature of Australia Day, which Indigenous people, and many other Australians, feel is an insensitive holiday which celebrates the occupation of Australia by European settlers.
In a statement published on the Triple J website earlier this week, the station said it was looking for listener feedback on a date change.
"As you might have heard, Triple J is reviewing the date of the Hottest 100 countdown for future years," the post said.
"Over the past 10 months, we’ve been consulting with a range of people, musicians, community leaders and representative groups on their opinions of Australia Day and the implications of holding the Hottest 100 on that day."
The posts called on listeners to provide feedback for the station to take into account in their decision-making process.
"And now we need to hear from you – Triple J’s audience. You are the people who vote, listen to and celebrate the Hottest 100. We want your thoughts on how you feel about Triple J, the Hottest 100, and holding the Hottest 100 on Australia Day, January 26."
Last year, a Melbourne man launched . The prize was a Falls Festival camping ticket, valued at around $400.
