The human remains of a twelve-year-old girl, who had been missing since Tuesday, have been found.
The child and her family were swimming in Mango Creek in the Northern Territory when she was reportedly attacked by a crocodile.
The girl's disappearance sparked a large scale land, water and air search with up to 40 locals at one stage assisting as they scoured the banks of the small creek.
A shirt believed to be belonging to the young girl was found earlier on Thursday, 36 hours into the search, the ABC reported.
A few hours later police announced that human remains had been located.
Northern Territory Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson said the remains found showed injuries that were consistent with a crocodile attack.
Sergeant Gibson said residents from surrounding homelands have travelled to Palumpa to support the girl's family.
"This is devastating news for the family, the community and everyone involved in the search.
"Police are providing support to the family and community, along with the first responders who attended the scene," she said in a statement.
"They are all onsite supporting the family involved in this incredibly tragic incident," Sergeant Gibson told the ABC.
