The Melbourne Football Club theme song will be played this weekend at the MCG in Woiwurrung, one of the traditional languages of the Wurundjeri people.

A new recording of ‘It’s a Grand Old Flag’ was performed by Wurundjeri woman Chenile Chandler.

“Our language, [like] many other Aboriginal languages has been lost over time,” Ms Chandler said.

“It is really special to share our language considering it is basically forgotten.”

Wurundjeri Elder Joy Murphy, who translated the lyrics, said she would “probably cry” when she heard the translated song play throughout the stadium on Sunday.

“It’s one of those things where it’s very meaningful and to have the Melbourne Football Club ask for this translation to be done is very exciting,” Aunty Joy said.

“It is a way of putting our culture first and foremost. It’s also the other opportunity of speaking and singing the language, and hopefully the fans will pick up some words along the way.”

“It is going to be very emotional and I’m very proud.”
