A 20-year-old Indigenous man fell to his death on Thursday while returning to the Kariong Correctional Centre from the Gosford Hospital on the News South Wales Central Coast.
According to the NSW Corrective Services department, the man was being escorted by two officers from the Gosford Hospital when he broke free and ran about 1.5 metres to jump over a 1.5 metre high wall and then fell approximately 10 metres.
Immediate Medical assistance was sought and the man was airlifted to the Royal North Shore Hospital, where was he was later pronounced dead.
"Corrective Services NSW extends its sympathies to the family and friends of a 20-year-old-man who was declared deceased yesterday, Wednesday 6 November, at Royal North Shore Hospital," a statement from the service said.
"All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest. It would be inappropriate to comment further on this particular matter while it is being investigated and goes before the Coroner."
Since the conclusion of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody 28 years ago, over 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody.
