Capping off an incredible year for First Nations music, the ARIA awards have seen Indigenous artists take home a swathe of awards.

However, despite a stellar year for Black female artists, expectations for a strong showing were disappointed in an awards ceremony dominated in all categories by men.

Coodjinburra youngster Budjerah was named Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist of the year for his eponymous debut EP. The award, announced by Ed Sheeran, honours the late Gudinski, a long-time supporter of First Nations musicians.

In a surprise to no one, Kamilaroi superstar The Kid LAROI took home artist of the year, thanking his "brother" Justin Bieber for his collaboration on their multi-platinum single "Stay".

"A big shout out to (Bieber) for being a part of this record and helping me make it so special," he said after claiming the award.
Meanwhile, two legends of local music took home gongs of their own.

Troy Cassar-Daley won Best Country Album, his fifth, for The World Today.

Archie Roach, inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2020, was honoured with Best Blues & Roots Album for The Songs of Charcoal Lane.
