Wild weather continues battering Australia's southeast with residents in New South Wales being warned the worst is yet to come.

A 63-year-old woman has died after a tree fell onto her house near the Victoria-New South Wales border overnight, a 63-year old man is also in hospital with injuries.

Flood emergency warnings have been issued in Tasmania for residents near the Derwent River, which is expected to exceed the major flood level of 7.3 metres.

Ausnet says around 112,000 homes across the southeast were without power on Monday morning; and significant delays are expected across Victoria's public transport system.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan says Victorians must stay alert.

"So Victorians who live in heavily treed areas. Please, have a plan. Keep in touch with the Vic Emergency App. And also if you can consider relocating to a family or friends, if needed, because as we know with events like this community safety is absolutely paramount when our state is experiencing another extreme weather event."

New research has revealed that an alarming number of Australian children suffer from emotional abuse.

Emotional abuse is a pattern of behaviours that damage a child’s sense of self-worth, impacting their emotional development including but not limited to, constant yelling, swearing, insulting, criticising, threatening, calling a child hurtful names or shaming them.

45,400 Australian children, confirmed to have experienced abuse during 2022-23.

Chief executive of Act for Kids Dr Katrina Lines, believes it is important to shed more light on this type of abuse.

"Emotional abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse, yet it often goes unnoticed or unreported. Emotional abuse is one of the five recognised forms of child maltreatment, so it's really important to raise awareness as the signs and symptoms might not be as obvious as physical abuse or neglect."

The New South Wales government will increase penalties for repeated or serious Apprehended Violence Order breaches as part of proposed domestic violence laws.

Tracking a person's movements or communications will be considered stalking under the proposal, as the definition is mordernised to include online tracking.

One in four customers who purchased a tracking device had a history of domestic violence, according to a survey by the New South Wales Crime Commission.

Premier Chris Minns says New South Wales is falling behind other states in addressing domestic violence.

"Because the sad reality is, compared to Queensland and Victoria, we're going the opposite way when it comes to the incidence and prevalence of family and domestic violence. I'd love to be able to report this morning that we were in the latest round of statistics making a reduction or seeing a reduction, but unfortunately, we're not."

The Greens will push a National Renters Protection Authority in the lead-up to the next federal election.

The minor party has proposed the regulator would have the powers to investigate rental breaches, strip agents of their licenses and fine dodgy landlords and real estate agencies.

The authority would allow the federal government to take a more active role in coordinating nationally consistent rental laws.

A federal government initiative will see graduates, apprentices and trainees recruited to maintain Australia's future nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

In an attempt to build up the necessary workforce for AUKUS, the initiative will allow submarine builder ASC Proprietary Limited to hire around 200 entry-level workers over the next two years.

Most of the expected 2000 new jobs created by the agreement will be based in Western Australia and will span fabrication, engineering, project management, supply chain, and operations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the jobs will help develop the nuclear powered submarine workforce.

And to sports, to rugby League now, the Sydney Roosters' finals hopes have been dealt a blow after star half back Sam Walker was left with what appears to be a serious knee injury during their match against Canberra.

Sam Walker was left writhing on the ground and clutching his knee after attempting to tackle Simi Sasagi 12 minutes into Sunday's game.

With Walker potentially out, the Roosters may now rely on Sandon Smith to play opposite Luke Keary on the team's path to the finals.
