D'Arcy Short and rookie Caleb Jewell clobbered unbeaten half centuries as the Hobart Hurricanes made light work of BBL strugglers Brisbane Heat.

The Hurricanes chased down the Heat's 6-145 with just one wicket down and with more than five overs to spare at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday.

Short smashed 68 from 41 balls, while Jewell kept pace with 61 from 38 balls for a maiden half century in his fifth T20 game.

The pair shared an unbeaten 132-run partnership in the nine-wicket win that puts Hobart four points clear atop the table.

"It makes my job a lot easier. It was nice to have a partnership with someone so dominating," the 21-year-old Jewell said of batting with Short, who became the first player to pass 500 runs for the season.

"It's a bit of a free hit that position at number three. To be able to actually score runs is awesome."

After being sent in under smoky Hobart skies, the Heat collapsed to 4-27 inside the powerplay with Jofra Archer the chief destroyer.

The Barbados-born quick took a nonchalant one-hander on the mid-wicket boundary to get rid of Max Bryant in the third over.

With the ball seemingly travelling for six, Archer stuck out his right hand, flicked the ball in the air, stepped out of the field of play and back in to take the catch.

"It doesn't surprise me," Jewell said of his teammate.

"I was trying to see through the smoke, saw a hand go up and it stuck."

Archer (2-28 from four overs) backed it up with the wicket of Chris Lynn (10) and Matthew Renshaw in two balls in another lacklustre batting performance from the Heat.

Alex Ross (62 from 35 balls) and skipper Jimmy Peirson (50 from 48 balls) shared a century fifth-wicket stand to salvage a respectable score but it wasn't enough.

Hurricanes quicks David Moody and James Faulkner both finished with 2-27.

The Heat cruised to 1-146 for their ninth win of the season after a heavy last-start loss to the Sydney Sixers.

"I think we just tried to scrap that last game ... the boys were pretty tired. The key was to bounce back in this game and we did," Jewell said.

The Heat remain second last with just three wins from 11 matches.
