Review into Vic assisted reproduction laws

A review of Victoria's IVF laws will examine issues including cost and access, the sale of complementary treatments and compensation for surrogates.

Medicare rebates and compensation for surrogates will be among issues examined as part of a Victorian review into the state's IVF laws.

The 12-month review, announced earlier this year following complaints about providers, will also look at the cost and effectiveness of IVF, the upselling of complementary therapies or "add-ons" and a 10-women limit imposed on sperm donors.

"The efficacy of some treatments has been challenged, and the appropriateness of providing treatment to women aged over 40 despite a low probability of success has been called into question," a consultation paper published on Thursday said.
