Australia had its best-ever day at the Olympics on day 12, with sailor Matt Wearn and skateboarder Keegan Palmer each picking up their second gold medals and pole vaulter Nina Kennedy and discus thrower Matt Denny each making history in their respective events.

Now on day 13, Australian athletes will continue to fight for a place on the podium.

In the water

Australian Moesha Johnson has splashed through the Seine's polluted waters to win a pristine silver medal in the marathon swimming 10km race.

The 26-year-old Tweed Heads, NSW, swimmer was finally outpaced in a thrilling three-woman open water race to the line by Dutch great Sharon van Rouwendaal, who regained the crown she won in Rio eight years ago.

For Germany-based Johnson, who had also finished sixth in the 1500m final in the pool, the silver made glorious amends for just missing out on a world championship medal in Doha earlier this year.

The marathon two-hour slog in the Seine was given the go-ahead before the early morning start which didn't stop vast crowds lining the banks near the gilded Pont Alexandre III bridge to watch the six 1.6km circuits.

In the ring

Australia is guaranteed two medals in boxing — and there are high hopes for the country's first-ever Olympic gold in the sport — with Charlie Senior and Caitlin Parker both in semi-finals.

Senior will face Uzbekistan's Abdumalik Khalokov in the 57kg division at 5.30am Friday morning AEST, while Parker will face China's Li Qian in the 75kg division at 6.02am AEST.

The lead semi-final at 6pm AEST will test the 22-year-old's ability to navigate the challenging 15m wall within the six-minute time frame.
