Daniel Andrews says it is 'still too early' to open up as Victoria records 114 new infections

Victoria recorded 114 new coronavirus cases and 11 deaths on Sunday, continuing a general downward trend in daily numbers. But the premier said it is still too early to ease restrictions.

Victoria has recorded 114 new coronavirus cases and 11 more deaths.

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed on Sunday a man in his 70s, five women and one man in their 80s and three women and one man in their 90s have died from the virus.

Nine of the 11 deaths are related to outbreaks at aged care facilities, bringing the state's toll from the virus to 524 and the national total to 611.
Mr Andrews said 382 deaths were linked to the aged care sector.

It follows 94 new cases on Saturday, which was the first day since 5 July that cases were in the double digits.

Mr Andrews said the case numbers "will bounce around a little bit" but were coming down.

"In general terms, we are seeing a fall across each of the key metrics and the strategy is working and that is a credit to every Victorian who has made a powerful contribution to that end," he said.
Melburnians are subject to another fortnight of strict stage four restrictions including an 8pm to 5am curfew.

Regional Victorians are under slightly less strict stage three restrictions for the same period.

Mr Andrews said it was still too early to ease restrictions.

"At 100, 94, at 114, whatever the number, we simply could not open up. Those numbers would explode, we would finish up and perhaps an even worse situation than we have been in recent months," he said.

Meanwhile, a potential solution to the political impasse on the government's desire to extend the state of emergency beyond 13 September could be close.

Victorian upper house MP Fiona Patten said on Saturday she could get the support to make a deal with the government for a sixth-month extension of the state of emergency.

In the Reason Party leader's proposal, the government would get an extension of powers enabling it to write and pass COVID-19-specific laws until March, not the 12 months it is after.

The government would have to brief minor parties and independents once a month, justifying the continuation of the state of emergency.

If the government wants to extend the powers beyond March, it will have to go back to parliament to argue for it again.

"This is a fair arrangement that I believe could gain support of several of my colleagues and pass the parliament - only by a small margin though," Ms Patten said.

A spokesman for Mr Andrews said on Saturday evening no deal had been struck.

Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien wants parliament to sit every month during the state of emergency to determine whether the powers are justified.

There are 472 Victorians in hospital with coronavirus, including 25 in intensive care.

Metropolitan Melbourne residents are subject to Stage 4 restrictions and must comply with a curfew between the hours of 8pm and 5am. During the curfew, people in Melbourne can only leave their house for work, and essential health, care or safety reasons.

Between 5am and 8pm, people in Melbourne can leave the home for exercise, to shop for necessary goods and services, for work, for health care, or to care for a sick or elderly relative.

All Victorians must wear a face covering when they leave home, no matter where they live.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Check your state’s restrictions on gathering limits.

If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, stay home and arrange a test by calling your doctor or contact the Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080.
