Lebanon's Ambassador to Australia, Giscard El Koury, was among those to attend the mass at the Maronite Catholic Church, and told SBS he hoped for peace at a time of global conflict.

"Today our souls are with those victims of terrorists. We truly condemn the terrorist act held in Europe and elsewhere and we hope that eventually this will end and peace will prevail, eventually. It has to be peace," Mr El Koury said.

Priests also touched on recent terror attacks as they addressed the congregation, calling for and end to the persecution of Christians across the world, saying: "We beseech our Lord Jesus to illuminate to darkened minds of those individuals who plot terror, murder and war, especially in the long suffering Middle East."

For Christians, Easter Sunday marks the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A cornerstone of the Christian faith, for many it represents hope and new life.

For 15-year-old Sabine, who attended mass with her sisters, it was also a time to celebrate "family and culture", while 9-year-old Charlie said what it was about, "Jesus rising from the dead - and chocolate."
