Former Labor Leader Bill Shorten will retire from politics at the next election.

Currently, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Mr Shorten, has served as leader of the Labor Party in opposition for six years.

Mr Shorten took over leadership from Kevin Rudd following Labor's 2013 election loss, was unsuccessful in the 2016 election with Labor losing out by one seat, and stepped down as leader after the 2019 election loss.

Known as the architect of the N-D-I-S, Bill Shorten played a key role in creating the legislation under the Gillard government and has returned to the portfolio in this term of government.
