Three people have died and at least 20 injured, after an erratic driver deliberately drove on the footpath into pedestrians on Bourke Street in Melbourne city today. A young child is one of the three people killed. The other two are said to be a male and female, both in their 30s, killed at different locations on Bourke Street.
Police said they shot the 26-year-old driver in the arm and have arrested him. He is under police guard in hospital. The driver is linked to an earlier stabbing in the city’s south. The Victorian Police Commissioner has said in a press conference that the Melbourne attack driver is known to police for Domestic violence. The driver's identity has been released. his name is James "Jimmy" Gargasoulas and has a history of drug use, violence and psychological problems. He was released on bail by a bail justice on the weekend after he was arrested in St Kilda foe a number of alleged offences, including family violence and stealing another car.
Victoria police have said that the Melbourne CBD incident is not a terrorist incident and there is no threat to public. Police is still present at the scene investigating and is asking public to avoid the area until further notice.
A message issued by Emergency Management Victoria said,
“Victoria Police and Emergency Services are still on scene in the area and will be for sometime.
There is no threat to the community. The only suspect has been arrested and is in police custody.
It is expected that Flinders Street, Swanston Street and Bourke Street between William and Swanston Streets will remain closed for some time due to Victoria Police conducting crime scene investigations.
Victoria Police have confirmed that this incident is not terrorism related.
Victoria Police ask you to avoid the immediate area. If you are on Bourke Street between Swanston Street and William Street area you should follow instructions from police and emergency services personnel.”
