International Sikh charity Khalsa Aid volunteers are helping the people of North Queensland areas lashed by heavy rain and flash-flooding during the recent days.

Nearly twenty thousand people were reportedly affected by flood in Townsville alone who were asked to evacuate their inundated homes and were housed in evacuation centres.

While the flood water has receded in many areas and people are returning to their homes, they are in need of help, particularly food and milk.

“We have posted our contact number on social media sites and asking anyone in need help to contact us and we deliver the required stuff to them,” Harpreet Singh, a Khalsa Aid volunteer who travelled from Melbourne to Townsville told SBS Punjabi.

“We recently went to Balgal Beach and Rollingstone areas that are nearly 60 kilometre from Townsville and elderly people in those areas needed food supplies. So, we are buying the material from supermarkets and delivering it to those people who for any reasons can’t themselves get the stuff,” Mr Singh said.

The houses that were inundated require clean up and the volunteers say they are willing to lend a hand in the effort. The Khalsa Aid volunteers expect they would be out and about delivering help for another week.

After a prolonged dry spell and a crippling drought, areas of North Queensland were lashed with heavy rain that caused massive floods that are said to be the worst in a century. In the last two weeks, Townsville received more rain than its annual average.
