An Indian man has pleaded guilty to misleading the Immigration authorities after he was found to have been living in Australia on a false identity for eleven years.
Parmjit Gaba first came to Australia in 1999 as an international student. He was known as Ajay Kumar at that time. In 2001, he applied for a protection visa which was not granted. He then returned to India in 2003.
However, he came back to Australia four years later as Parmjit Parmjit as a dependent of his wife.
He was granted the Australian citizenship in 2013 and he changed his name to Parmjit Gaba.
While he raised his family working as a taxi driver in Sydney, the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services executed warrants against him in 2016, reported.
He was charged with concealing material evidence and making false statements and was prosecuted by the Australian Border Force and the Department of Human Services.
On Tuesday, Mr Gaba pleaded guilty to misleading immigration officials.
Magistrate Tim Keady said Gaba had prepared to commit this offence.
“You have obviously informed yourself how to deceive the system and you acted on that,” Magistrate Keady said.
The Magistrate sentenced him to 100 hours of community service work. He was told to report to Parramatta Community Corrections District Office within 7 days in order for the court order to be processed.
