In the wake of US election results, Jagmeet Singh MPP Bramalea Gore Malton, has shared his views about the electoral system and the direction the society will go into, if no action is taken.

Jagmeet Singh starts his speech by saying,

”I think it’s fair to say that many Canadians are deeply troubled by the result of the US election”

He goes on to say that Donald Trump’s campaign was misogynist, racist and xenophobic which causes fear and division. Jagmeet Singh blames the electoral system for the US election result saying that it is deeply flawed and that’s why even when less people voted for Trump, he managed to win with all power. He says the federal government should be held accountable and there needs to be a more just electoral system put in place. He suggests the introduction of proportional representational system in politics.

"The fact that someone can campaign on a message that was misogynist, racist, xenophobic, that was based on fear and division, and could win was something that troubles all of us"

Mr Jagmeet Singh also expresses concerns regarding US’s influence on Canada saying that US is a larger country and tends to have an effect on Canada. He worries that the climate in Canada will be influenced by Donald Trump becoming the President which will make is acceptable to be racist and misogynist.

Jagmeet Singh goes on to say that it’s time that Canada showed some guidance to US and the rest of the world and show them that a fair society can be created by working together.
