Often, car buyers try to find a balance between factors like safety, cost, style and utility, when buying a used car.

But experts advise that people should make safety their top priority as too many car crashes have been proving fatal.

Motorists should aim for a car with a minimum of 4 stars, but 5 stars would be even safe and better.

The good news is that the latest contains many vehicles rated 4 or 5 stars in each category making it easier for motorists to pick the safest car that suits their budget.

UCSR findings are based on statistics collected from more than eight million car crashes, where someone was killed or seriously injured.

It is also revealed that newer or costlier vehicles may not be necessarily safe!

Mandeep Singh, a Melbourne-based car mechanic, has been working in the automotive service and repair industry from the last ten years.

He told SBS Punjabi that car buyers often ignore safety features for various reasons.

“It could either be due to ignorance or a small cost difference. It is about finding the right balance. But you should not overlook safety features over the style and looks of a car,” he says.

“A bigger and costlier car does not necessarily mean better, when it comes to car safety."

Mandeep suggests that features like Electronic Stability Control, power braking and curtain airbags may enhance the safety of a car significantly.

“You must prioritise safety over other features when deciding on which car to buy,” he said.

“It is all about you and your loved ones! You must do a proper research and consultation before buying any car - let it be small, medium or big.

“Some cars are overpriced but it’s not necessary they’re safe. It is important to check online ratings and reviews before making the final commitment.”
