Amjyot Singh a step closer to fulfil Australian NBL dream

Amjyot Singh Gill is one of the four members of the India’s National Basketball team who want to seize a chance to play in Australia’s professional basketball league.

Indian Basketball players can now dream of their participation in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). 

With Australia now part of the FIBA Asia Region, Indian players have a chance to play in Australia as local players.

On an invitation from Australia’s professional basketball league, Amjyot Singh Gill, Amritpal Singh, Yadwinder Singh, and Vishesh Bhriguvanshi participated in the NBL Draft combine trial on 17th and 18th of April at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Amjyot Singh told 's  that he is optimistic of his selection in the National Basketball League.

“It’s an opportunity not be missed. Having an exposure at this level is key to become a better player at an international level,” said Mr Singh.

Mr Singh mentioned that more than 70 players participated in the trial, which included returning US college players, South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) players, Australian state league players, and members of Australia's national U18 and U20's teams.

“The program provided a chance to the shortlisted players to showcase their abilities, their skills, their strengths to help make their presence for 2017/18 NBL Season."

“It’s great to be here in Melbourne. It’s an opportunity not be missed. We are here to prove ourselves in the NBL Combine.”
"In the selection process, Indian players were in competition with the Chinese players. So clearly, we hold an advantage in this selection process."
"We are not competing in the three foreign player quotas, which is to be taken by American or European candidates.”

“It was a great opportunity to interact with coaches and scouts from different NBL teams. Let’s see if it works out well,” said Mr Singh.
Chandigarh based Amjyot Singh Gill originally hails from village Maherna in Sangrur district of Punjab.

Standing at six-foot-nine he is a naturally gifted talented Basketball player.

He was part of the Basketball team that guided India into the quarterfinals of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

Amjyot has prior experience of playing in a professional leagues abroad in USA and Japan.
