Revealed: Australia’s top ten universities for 2021

QS World University Rankings 2021 has named seven Australian universities in the top 100. Here's the list.

The Australian National University has once again been named the top Australian university in the  released on Tuesday.

ANU has been rated 31st in the global rankings for another year running based on its academic reputation, international faculty, citations per faculty ratio and international students.

While the University of Sydney ranked number 2 in Australia, it improved its international position from 42 to 40.

“This is a timely reminder of the global standing of the University,” said Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence.

“An important contributor to our success in these highly-regarded rankings is the quality of our research across all disciplines, and how frequently it is cited by others. High-quality research ultimately generates the greatest benefits for our communities.”
Other Australian universities who made it to the top 100 list include the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, Monash University, University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide, University of Technology Sydney and the University of Wollongong.

The University of Melbourne ranked third in Australia and at number 41 on international rankings while University of New South Wales ranked at number 44 and University of Queensland ranked 46.

Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson told SBS Hindi, “The results of the latest QS World Ranking of Universities again confirm the international competitiveness of Australia’s universities.”

“While there are several different international rankings of universities, all with differing assessment criteria, Australian universities’ consistent performance shows that they’ve been doing an outstanding job.”
Australia’s reputation as a safe place with an enviable lifestyle also plays a part. Looking ahead over the next few years, how Australia has dealt with the coronavirus only makes us a better place to study - Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson.
“In 2018, a survey of more than 80,000 international tertiary students found that the quality of teaching, the reputation of the qualification, and personal safety and security were the top three factors for deciding to study in Australia.”

“Whatever the post-COVID 19 future holds, students can be assured that the quality of both the teaching and qualifications from Australian universities will remain world-class.”

In world rankings, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University maintained their rank as top 3 universities in the world. 

The rankings, produced by global higher education consultancy QS Quacquarelli Symonds, rank the world’s top 1,604 institutions and are the seventeenth edition of the QS World University Rankings.

Australia will soon allow international students to return

The federal government has said it will consider exempting international students from Australia's travel ban as early as July.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison while said that the door for overseas-based students to return to Australian universities will open soon.

While specifics around the exemption were not outlined, Mr Morrison said it would only be done if strict quarantine restrictions were met.

"Issues of international students, you'll note that it does come into the third step of the plan, that is a possibility," he said.

"We are open to that, and we would be working with institutions to see how that could be achieved.

"But it must be done according to those strict quarantine restrictions and how that's done, and how those costs are met."

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Check your state’s restrictions on gathering limits.
