5-year-old dies in a freak accident at his kindergarten

The child tripped on the concrete footsteps at the Southern Rise Children’s Centre.

A 5-year-old boy has died in a freak accident at his pre-school in Wodonga, Victoria, 9News reported.

The child, Sufian Ahmad, fondly called Sufi, tripped on the concrete footsteps at the Southern Rise Children’s Centre around 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Para-medics were present on the site and reported that Sufi was semi-conscious when they first tended to him. But he went into cardiac arrest on their way to the Albury Base Hospital and died shortly after, according to Victoria Police.

Sufi’s parents Shadan Ahmad and Nimrah Qaseem were known members of their local Islamic society.

President of Albury-Wodonga’s Islamic Society, Yakub Mohammed told The Border Mail that the family had recently moved to Wodonga from Ballarat. Mr. Mohammed had met the family at their mosque on several occasions.

He said Sufi was a bubbly boy, full of energy.

“At the moment, (Sufi's parents) would be pretty devastated and heartbroken losing their only child. We are right behind them if they need any help from Muslim society here,” he was quoted saying by The Border Mail.

POLICE: NOTHING SUSPICIOUS ABOUT SUFI’S DEATH

Police said there is nothing suspicious about Sufi's death, confirming that he had fallen on the stairs.

“We believe on two steps, two external steps and the exact circumstances are under investigation and we're preparing a report for the coroner,” Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer told 9News.

The school’s principal Clint Eckhardt said the school was “deeply saddened” by the tragic loss. Mr. Eckhardt, said, “Our thoughts are with the students, family, friends and classmates at this terrible time.”
