On April 9, 1974, Mary Kyriazis became the first woman in Australia, to give birth to quadruplets.


When she arrived in Adelaide in 1971, Mary Kyriazis could not imagine what her future held.

Having already two children, Denise and Evangelos, she left Khartoum of Sudan with her husband Pyrros.

Shortly afterwards the family had their third child Olga, and Mrs Kyriazis became pregnant again one year after her daughter's birth.

She remembers, that it was something that the couple had wished for.

During the four month pregnancy, Mary Kyriazis was informed that she was pregnant with three babies, yet a month later an X-ray revealed that she was expecting quadruplets.

During the 1974 Easter Mrs Kyriazi brought into the world Victoria, Theodore, Dimitris and Nicholas.

"At first it was difficult, until the kids started school. When they went to school I had so many hours in front of me. From the morning I did my housework and I had my mom", Mrs Kyriazis said in an interview with SBS Greek.

The first woman to have a quadruplets in Australia also remembers the challenges she and her family faced.

"We had a difficult time, my husband worked seven days a week for so many years without a break. I could not work and leave them. But as I always say if it was to relive my life, I would gladly do it again", she said.
