Sydney’s most iconic building will be lit in blue and white on 25 March to commemorate the bicentenary of the Greek War of Independence.

Highlights
  • Sydney Opera House will be lit in the Greek flag colours on the night of 25 March
  • The initial request was for a flag projection on the building that would cost $50,000
  • A special event will take place at the Town Hall which will also be lit in blue and white
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian issued an announcement to confirm the commemorative project will go ahead.

“We are proud to share in this proud moment in history with our Greek community in NSW,” Ms Berejiklian said.

She also took the opportunity to thank Greek Australians for their contribution to the state.

Speaking to SBS Greek, the president of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, Harry Danalis, invited Sydneysiders to attend en mass the event.

“This is one of our most important events to commemorate the 200 years’ anniversary and I think […] a great number of community members need to support it […] to honour the fights of the Greek people for independence.”

On the same night, Sydney’s Town Hall – where George Ellis and his orchestra will perform the Greek national anthem - will also be lit in the Greek flag colours.

Mr Danalis said the commemorating initiative at the Sydney Opera House enjoyed support across the political spectrum.

The original request was for the Greek flag to be projected on the iconic building, but the estimated cost amounted to $50,000.

* The Hymn to Liberty event will take place at the Sydney Town Hall, on Thursday 25 March at 7pm (Price: $20 + booking fee)
