At least 10 Greek-Australians are included in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.


In total there are 993 Australians who receive awards in the general division and 221 people are receiving meritorious and military awards.

Using as a basic criterion the Greek surname, this year we find the following Australians of Greek origins receiving an award.

In the category Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia there are:

Mrs Lilliane Gomatos, from Darwin, for her significant service to the Greek community of Northern Territory.

Ms Athena (Tina) Karanastasis, from Hawthorne SA, for her significant service to the multicultural community of South Australia.

Professor Constance Helen Katelaris, from Epping NSW, for significant service to medicine in the field of immunology and allergy.

Professor Steven Anthony Krilis, from Hunters Hill NSW, for significant service to medical research in the areas of inflammation, thrombosis and allergic disease.

Dr Nicholas Saltos, from NSW, for significant service to medicine and to education.

In the category Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division, there are:

Ms Patti Manolis, from Geelong (Victoria) for significant service to the library and information sector.

Mrs Tasia Manos, for service to the Greek community of Victoria.

Ms Vasiliki Nihas-Bogiatzis, from Barton ACT, for service to the arts and cultural heritage.

Mr Bill Papastergiadis, from Toorak, for service to the Greek Orthodox community of Victoria.

Captain John Stavridis, who receives the Conspicuous Service Cross for outstanding achievement as the Commander Officer of HMAS Hobart.

40% women

This year’s Honours list has the highest percentage of women ever included in the award list, making up 40% of recipients.

In the top honour (the Companion of the Order of Australia- AC) there are 12 people. Five of them women. They include ABC chair Ita Buttrose and former president of the Unions (ACTU) Sharan Burrow. Among the recipients of the AC are also, former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd and actor Hugh Jackman.
