Mythic Revolutions is a role-playing game created in Greece. The game is made for the Greeks living in other parts of the world and is currently making its first steps in Australia with help from the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria. Interview in Greek.

Role-playing games is a mix of theater and board games. The players take on the roles of heroes and heroines, while a Game Master walks them through a series of adventures, either pseudo-historical or fantastical.

Mythic Revolutions is one such game that takes place during the Greek War of Independence.  A time period that is relatively unexplored in role-playing games. Fotis Sagonas is an author and the mind behind Mythic Revolutions. The inspiration for the game struck him as he was doing research for his novels. Mr. Sagonas discovered that many Greeks did not know several important historical facts about the war their ancestors fought centuries ago.

This, along with his passion for role playing-games, a passion that has been going strong for 30 years, gave birth to Mythic Revolutions. It’s a game that not only aspires to entertain but also aims to educate.

In Greece efforts in the board game industry are rare. According to Mr. Sagonas, Mythic Revolutions is the fourth Greek role-playing game and the only one so far that has been translated in English. Even so, the players have embraced it.

Interest from Australia

The game is currently making its first steps in Australia, with help from the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria. Mr. Sagonas is thrilled about the interest Australia has shown, as the game is addressed to Greeks living abroad.

«The interest the Community has shown is important and we hope to bring the game to Australia, highlighting the Greek War of Independence as a central world event».

So far, the Community and Mr. Sagonas have organized two events in the community’s center where young people and Greek teachers had the opportunity to play the game. First impressions are looking good and another event is being scheduled for early September.

Mythic Revolutions has two main campaigns or storylines. In the first ones, the heroes can take part in the exodus of Missolonghi in 1826 and in the second, the characters are the first Greek convicts that arrive in Australia in 1829.

What does the future hold?

Mr. Sagonas does have future plans for the game. The game is already forming a fanbase in Greece and he believes its going to be popular in Australia as well. As the game grows, there will be more expansions with new campaigns for the players and new rules to enrich the experience. Mr. Sagonas thinks the game could even tell stories in different time periods.

«We are quietly optimistic. Mythic Revolutions is a game that, like every role playing game, constantly evolves. So if everything goes well it will keep going strong».
