Police release footage after elderly Greek woman was bashed outside Melbourne church

A witness appeal has been issued amidst ongoing investigations in the case of Penelope Katsavos’ assault in South Yarra.

The 78-year-old Greek Australian was taken to hospital after being found next to a puddle of blood on the steps of Sts Constantine & Helen Greek orthodox church on Saturday.

It is believed a male assaulted the victim before stealing her shopping trolley, which was later located by authorities in a nearby street with its content intact.

On Tuesday, investigators released images and CCTV of a male they believe “may be able to assist with their inquiries.”
The male is described as Caucasian in appearance, with a thin build, dark coloured hair and a moustache.

The footage shows him wearing a brown t-shirt, dark coloured pants and shoes.

Ms Katsavou suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but her family says she is expected to stay in hospital for weeks.

“We’ve been living here close to the church for more than 40 years now, and this is the first time we’re seeing an incident like this,” her son Evripidis Katsavos told SBS Greek.
