Forth year for the 'Demosthenes' Greek language public speaking competition

The 'Demosthenes' Greek Public Speaking competition provides opportunities for students to extend their skills in researching, speech writing, and public speaking. It is hosted by the Modern Greek Teachers Association of Victoria (MGTAV), and its president Maria Dikeou talks to SBS Greek.

Entry in the competition supports student learning Greek by providing further opportunities to learn and practice their language skills.

Educators can use the 'Demosthenes Competition' as a context for task-oriented, authentic oral activities. The competition supports learning and assessment in the curriculum for Greek in a range of learning domains.

Preparation of students

In preparing students for this competition, teachers can involve the whole class in a range of related activities such as brainstorming ideas for speeches, delivering speeches in various class formats, and listening for a speaker's effectiveness. Not all students in the class may want to participate in this competition.

These ideas are for teachers who may want to encourage students to participate. It is a valuable exercise in itself. Those students who do not wish to participate in the competition may participate in significant supportive ways by providing 'critical friends' for speakers and by assisting in research and the writing of speeches.

All students can be involved in some way in the event by providing input for preparatory activities such as group discussions and research. Participation of all students in writing and editing speeches can also be encouraged.
